OpenAI announced a major initiative to support the journalism ecosystem with tools, training, and partnerships for students, educators, and news organizations. The initiative begins with collaborations at CUNY’s Newmark J-School and Northwestern University’s Medill School, providing over 400 ChatGPT Edu subscriptions to interested graduate students and faculty for the 2026–2027 academic year. This initiative builds on OpenAI’s ongoing work with WAN-IFRA and INMA to support international news organizations in understanding and shaping the role of AI in journalism. The new program aims to help future journalists develop the skills, fluency, and confidence needed before entering the newsroom, ensuring the deployment and use of AI is grounded in the real needs and experiences of the journalism community.
