OpenAI has announced the achievement of its goal to develop an automated AI researcher that can work under human supervision to further progress in deep learning and alignment. According to the announcement, the company has now reached the goal, announced last fall, of having an automated research intern by September 2026. By 'research intern,' they mean a system that can carry out well-defined research tasks under human direction, including tasks that would take a skilled researcher a few days. OpenAI aims to create a fully automated AI researcher by March 2028. The company also emphasizes the importance of transparency in sharing progress towards RSI (Research Safety Intern) and plans to continue being transparent about their RSI progress as their measurement techniques and understanding improve.
