Cloudflare Launches Forge: An Open Source Pipeline for SDKs, CLIs, and Documentation

Today, Cloudflare announced the launch of Forge, an open-source pipeline designed to generate SDKs, CLIs, and documentation. Forge is intended to address the challenges faced by development teams in creating and maintaining these critical tools for their products.
Forge is described as a pluggable generation pipeline that anyone can deploy and run for free. It is currently used to generate the output required for the cf CLI and is expected to power Cloudflare’s API documentation, SDKs, and more in the coming months.
The need for Forge arose as Cloudflare's API grew beyond the capabilities of their existing generators. The company sought a solution that could generate previews on every pull request and handle API surfaces distributed across hundreds of services and repositories. Existing hosted products failed to meet these requirements, leading Cloudflare to develop Forge internally.
Forge aims to detect problems in continuous integration (CI) before they cause issues downstream. It supports multiple programming languages, including Rust, Python, Go, PHP, and Terraform, with special attention given to the Terraform transition.
Cloudflare believes that building tools for APIs is a fundamental part of the internet and should be accessible without relying on SaaS products. Therefore, Forge is made available under the permissive Apache 2.0 license, encouraging contributions and customization.
