Cloudflare has released EmDash 1.0, a stable, free, and open-source content management system (CMS) built on Astro, designed to power production websites, agency platforms, and hosting company site-building experiences. According to the announcement, EmDash 1.0 is ready to support real-world deployments, offering developers, editors, and agents a robust set of tools including the EmDash admin, API, CLI, and MCP server. The release marks a significant milestone since EmDash's initial beta, addressing stability, security, and user confidence in its maintenance and upgrade processes.
Developers can now publish sandboxed plugins and site owners can discover, inspect, and install them directly from the EmDash plugin registry, which does not require handing ownership of their identity or releases to a central marketplace. This decentralized approach aims to provide more control and flexibility to developers and site owners.
Real-world deployments, such as Avulux's transition from WordPress to EmDash, have played a crucial role in shaping EmDash 1.0. Avulux's Director of Innovation and Systems, Greg Barbosa, highlighted the benefits of EmDash, noting that it offers a fast and simple platform for updates, contrasting sharply with the maintenance burden of WordPress.
Empress, a platform for multi-brand entities, is also leveraging EmDash to offer a flexible multisite experience, emphasizing the importance of EmDash's foundational capabilities in ensuring fast, safe, and easy-to-manage sites. Raj Makker, founder of Empress, expressed excitement about being part of EmDash's journey, highlighting the potential for complete control over multiple sites.
With EmDash 1.0, Cloudflare aims to provide a secure, flexible, and developer-friendly CMS that addresses the needs of various stakeholders in the web development ecosystem.
