OpenAI Launches Astra for Law, a Legal AI Foundation

OpenAI announced the launch of Astra for Law, a new AI foundation tailored for law firms and legal technology companies. This product combines GPT-6 Astra, the company's latest and most powerful model, with settings, tools, and context optimized for professional legal work.

API customers such as Harvey and Legora will be able to integrate Astra for Law into their products and workflows. The new legal search index and instructions for legal analysis and writing enhance Astra’s capabilities across legal practice areas, providing firms with the freedom to build their own applications and workflows.

Astra for Law includes specific controls for confidential client work and integrates with 26 new ecosystem plugins, connecting ChatGPT to specialist tools like Relativity and Clio. The model will be initially offered to selected law firms through Trusted Access in ChatGPT and Codex, and will soon be available via the API as 'gpt-6-astra-law'.

John Savva, a partner at Sullivan & Cromwell, praised the model's research depth and sensitivity to authority, while Niko Grupen, Head of Applied Research at Harvey, noted its strength in legal research aspects such as grounding answers in on-point authorities and offering practical guidance.
