What is MicroLED, and why does it matter for wearables?

MicroLED is a display technology where each pixel is its own microscopic inorganic LED — self-emissive like OLED, but far brighter, more efficient, and immune to burn-in. In wearables and AR it is the enabling display: bright enough to read in sunlight, efficient enough not to wreck battery life, and durable enough for an always-on watch face or heads-up display.

Why it took so long

The manufacturing challenge is "mass transfer": moving millions of individual LED dies onto a backplane with near-perfect yield. That is why MicroLED reached small, high-value panels — smartwatches, AR glasses, teleprompter-style displays — before large TVs.

For a watch or AR device, the practical wins are outdoor readability, no burn-in on a persistent UI, and a real cut in display power draw — the largest battery consumer on most wearables.
